What’s up? March 2023

March was a hard month for fiction writing. I needed to finish a conference paper, which I did. So, I’ll take that as a win. I also traveled for the conference, which threw off my writing routine. When I was writing, it was all world-building.

World-building is a fun and dangerous enterprise. This bout of world-building started with a simple enough question: What would Ory and Bella see, hear, and smell on the walk from his suite to the pub where they were meeting some friends? I have a mental model of the ship and its major corridors, but I hadn’t tried to visualize it from the point of view of my characters. I also had a rough idea of the system of shopkeepers and how they mesh with the otherwise socialist economy based on everyone working for the Village Ship and being provided with basic needs as the primary economy. So, I plunged into detailed descriptions that were far too long for the few sentences I needed for the scene. But, I’m better prepared to write those few sentences when I return to scene writing.
